Carmen DeVries, DDS

Dr. DeVries says that she gets to meet incredible people, hear amazing stories, and help her patients reclaim their health and confidence every single day. It’s a tremendously meaningful experience that fills her with energy and motivation, and she loves going out of her way to create a soothing environment that helps everyone feel relaxed and catered to in her chair.

Why Did You Decide to Become a Dentist?

After starting her professional life as an electrical engineer, Dr. DeVries felt that something was missing. She wanted to find a career where she could work more personally with people and help them. Her grandmother and father were dentists, and her father really encouraged her to think about it when she was considering making a big change. Dentistry offered the connection she wanted combined with the science and level of detail that initially drew her to engineering, so it seemed like the perfect fit.

Where Did You Study Dentistry?

Dr. DeVries studied electrical and biomedical engineering at Johns Hopkins University, and after spending a few years in the field, she went back to school at the University of Maryland School of Dentistry. She went on to work in family practice for about five years before joining an existing geriatric dental office in 2013, solidifying her decision to focus on patients aged 55+.

Over the course of her 15+ year career, she has taken a wide range of continuing education focused on dental implants, tooth extractions, and full-mouth restorations. She is committed to staying at the forefront of dental technology and techniques to deliver the most up-to-date care for our patients.

Outside of the Dental Office, What Do You Like to Do?

Family life is Dr. DeVries’s main focus outside of dentistry. She and her husband have been married for over 15 years and have two wonderful daughters in addition to their beloved dog, Peaches. They all spend plenty of quality time with Dr. DeVries’s parents, two sisters, and her five nieces and one nephew.

An avid traveler who has been to all 50 states, Dr. DeVries has served as a Girl Scout leader for almost a decade. She says it has been an honor to watch her daughter’s troop grow from energetic kindergarteners to conscientious high schoolers. She is also passionate about staying active, so you’ll often find her weightlifting, hiking, doing yoga, or running (to the point of completing a marathon!).
